Even though this was for charity, the fact remains that the likes of these one or two letter domains didn’t come cheap. So why are they worth so much?
Some companies have paid millions to secure the perfect name in the past, showing the value that some place on the power of a name and its potential for traffic. With a one or two letter domain, you are likely to get a fair amount of direct traffic. Whether that traffic is of good value is up for debate, but it is traffic nonetheless.
Buying For Profit
So if a domain has no implicit value, unless it is your brand name or related key term, why would you spend thousands on getting one? Well, most investors are probably not looking to do anything with their domain purchases. They may redirect them to sites that they own, but more likely they will sit on them, renew when the time comes and wait for a business to show some interest. If a business wants that name bad enough, they will pay almost anything to get it!
